Sparks
Northeast of the Reno metro area is the neighboring City of Sparks, which was originally founded as a “rail city” on the transcontinental railroad in 1904. Originally an independent city with its own downtown, it’s edges are less distinct now as the Reno area continues to grow.
Downtown Sparks, called Victorian Square, features the historic train station, bars and restaurants, the area’s original craft brewery Great Basin and casinos. Farther east along I-80 is the giant outdoor mall Legends, featuring an outlet mall, IMAX theater, SCHEELS sporting goods store, and Wild Island (a family waterpark). Legends is situated right next to the Sparks Marina, a 77-acre lake with sandy beaches, trees and walking paths. Surrounded by desert hills, Sparks has many parks and trails for outdoor activities like hiking and mountain biking, as well as plenty of opportunities for off-roading.
While the older areas of Sparks continue to see revitalization, especially among its quaint folk Victorian homes, two of the fastest growing neighborhoods with new construction are Spanish Springs and Wingfield Springs, which feature spacious ranch-style homes influenced by Spanish colonial and pueblo revival styles.
